Outdoor Training and National Navigation Awards

Iain offers three levels of navigation course. Each can be assessed for the National Navigation Award Scheme and each lasts one full day. Assessment of Silver and Gold awards takes place on a second day.

Level One (Bronze): One day. The basics to equip you to follow and feel confident on most moor and forest paths in the UK. We will look at general hill walking techniques, equipment and planning: ideal for Volunteer Walk Leaders and School Activity Leaders.

Level Two (Silver): Two days. Learn to read the subtle signs on, and off, the map. Plan your expedition and follow the old drove roads. Learn to use the compass for accurate way finding and learn how to pace and time route sections. Ideal for Walking Group Leader and Duke of Edinburgh award candidates. A great course for an active weekend!

Level Three (Gold): Two days for advanced navigation and relocation skills. Micro navigation for emergency situations and foul weather conditions (not full Scottish winter conditions). This course will prepare you for your UK Mountain Leader Award. Assessment takes place after consolidation of skills learned. Candidates should have the silver NNAS or WGL award.

GPS Navigation: One day. An exciting hill day with challenging GPS training to teach and test the accuracy and limitations of this incredible system. We'll also incorporate training on altimeters and discuss navigation overseas.

These courses are ideal for groups of friends, clubs and organisations and can be held throughout Scotland.
